Accessibility

spacer image The most popular place to access the sand dunes is about two miles east of Stovepipe Wells Village (about 23 miles northwest of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center) on Highway 190.

Suggestions for your visit

spacer image From Highway 190, the view of the sand dunes is quite striking. A popular hiking destination is the highest dune, which is about two miles from the highway. There are no established trails, and the freedom to roam is one of the most delightful aspects of dune exploration. The best time to enjoy the sand dunes is when lighting is most dramatic during the early morning or late afternoon. Moonlight hikes are also magical, but be alert for rattlesnakes during the warmer months..
