Notes:
Water penetrated through the tuft, dissolving some of the minerals (mostly silica from the volcanic ash). The silica rich water penetrated into the tree trunks. As the silica solution filled in the cells, the cell walls were replaced and gradually the wood was turned to stone, or petrified.
