Dave is re-mapping entire island, but says existing map was quite good for its time. When USGS publishes, we'll update, but for now we'll just view the older map.

One… can start White Rock, Frijoles, and Puye 7.5's if we so desire as they won't be changing at all….. 2010-0318: Moved project assessment docs and files to Z:\GRE\GIS\park_data\band, see these docs for more detailed explanation; 2010-0311: Tim moved to "can be started" from "waiting…" based upon existence of complete coverage for all 12 BAND QOIs, but there are caveats…… found newer USGS pub for pp-1720 that gives 2 outstanding QOIs for Montoso Peak and Cochiti Dam, and is GIS based. Could use this and GPRA complete….Phil Reiker has contacted NMGS and they are in midst of revising several of the existing quads too, so may wait for that to too….need to decide as park could be GPRA completed with exisiting pubs…….. And then revised later…….2009-1125: need Cochiti Dam to GPRA complete park and Montoso Peak is desired QOI……..2008-0103: trying to assemble 12-7.5' quads of area: Puye (GMAP 6547), Guaje Mt (GMAP 6633), Valle Toledo (GMAP 7222), Valle San Antonio (7223), White Rock (7217), Frijoles (7224), Bland (7225), Redondo Peak (7226), Montoso Peak (awaiting), Cochiti Dam (awaiting), Canada (7218) and Bear Springs Peak (6630). Have digital GIS for all but White Rock (??did Elaine Jacobs finish digitizing this in 2006 ?), Bland, Bear Springs (all of which have published maps though) and awaiting delivery of Cochiti Dam (Bruce Heise says it should be out soon (?) and Montoso Peak from USGS (need expected delivery dates for these two quads from Bruce though) 2011-1227: Received all data and docs from Heather Stanton. Still waiting for Cochiti Dam data.

MTGS should be consulted to see if any new mapping has occurred. BIHO sits in inverted graben structure, so geologically interesting. MTGS searching for source maps of Dillon 1x2; they'd consider doing dedicated BIHO map for us; they think Dillon 1x2 too coarse, but for GRE purposes think we can use existing digital to get something out. Near Salmon NF (GMAP 4195), but just misses BIHO

2008-0227: Phil and Tim discussed via phone; will exclude Florence and Valley Farms 7.5's because they don't intersect park. Melanie says this park can be started; has scoping summary. Need to use GMAPs 74379 (Blackwater 7.5') and 74372 (Coolidge 7.5'), but Tim thinks maybe some info from Mesa 30x60 surficial (GMAP 1451) and bedrock (GMAP 1450) might supplement/enhance some areas of the Blackwater 7.5' at least for bedrock; surficial is hopefully best on dedicated 7.5'. Tim also sent request to AZGS (Ryan Clark / Stevan Gyetvai) to see if any of these exist now in digital format; received CD-ROm di-24 for "Phoenix area"; some utility for giving us Blackwater digitally, but stops well short of CAGR boundary.

Peter Haeussler (USGS) suggests we include the following map reference in our digital geologic map:
Bemis, Sean, 2004, Neotectonic framework of the north-central Alaska Range foothills: M.Sci thesis, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 153 pp. Another version of this appears in Bemis and Wallace, 2008, AGU monograph 179.
According to Peter: "Their mapping changes quite a few features. For example, the north vergent thrust faults along the park road, and interpreted by Bemis as backthrusts (south-vergent thrusts). I think Bemis interpretation of these features is much better than previous mapping."2009-1109: were issues with map and unit tables that can be improved; Jim Chappell would like to upgrade this project based upon lessons learned from converting other AK GRI parks……2006-0822: lots of problems with "download" file projections and naming confusion: "DENAxxx" is the compiled larger scale maps; "DNLIxxx" are the 6-250k sheets, but they don't project properly at all because of UTM zone issues. I expect to have that part completed within a few weeks, but the topo base for the British Columbia part is still iffy.
Then come two USGS internal peer reviews. I have the reviewers identified, but I can't predict how quickly they will complete their task. Then comes a series of approvals: One from the USGS Office Chief in Anchorage; then one from the USGS Alaska Science Center Director in Anchorage; then finally one from the USGS Director's agent in Menlo Park……….

2008-0122: after discussions with Steve Ambrose (HOFU) we agreed to do full Elverson and Pottstown 7.5' quads for this park. He says they are high spot and most water drains away from them. Will likely just crop out from PAGS statewide geology for these quads or use PAGS statemap developed from 7.5' mapping at 62.5 scale (GMAPs 74111, 7410 ? others ?). As backup should compare / contrast with GMAP 1578 (Newark 1x2) . PAGS water report 49, plate1-sheet 3 (GMAP 4464) was also mentioned as covering all of HOFU boundary and should be evaluated closely. Seems to match statemap (GMAP 7410) pretty well so guessing we could just crop it to Elverson and Pottstown extents. We need to define our definitive PA statewide geologic coverage that we're drawing from; Make sure we agree on proper citation of PA data either as statewide, 30x60, or 7.5' original sources (see Steph for discussion). Steve says talk to Liza Rupp at VAFO to see if she has watershed files for HOFU as she supports HOFU for GIS

Tim thinks it might be as follows for Idaho 7.5's: Wallowa, Captain John Rapids, Joseph, Lapwai (GMAPs 68029 & 2804), Kamiah (GMAP 68034), Stites, White Bird (GMAP 74861), Ahsahka (GMAP 68042). In Montana at Bear Paw Battlefield it's the Cleveland NW and Cleveland 7.5's (Rocky Boy 30x60) and at Big Hole (BIHO) it's Big Hole Battlefield 7.5' (=Wisdom 30x60, and Dillon 1x2). Orofino ID 30x60 (GMAP 74848) also fills in several 7.5's of interest
2004-0721 Tim has copies of Shane Smith's mapping "Surface Geology and Geologic Hazard Maps and Explanations of Geologic Units and Hazards of the White Bird and Clearwater Battlefield Sites, Nez Perce NHP", dated July 23, 2002. 2008-0626: FROM MAPPING PORTION OF SCOPING SUMMARY: Point Reyes National Seashore has fourteen 7.5-minute quadrangles of interest: Valley Ford, Bodega Head, Point Reyes NE, Tomales, San Geronimo, Inverness, Drakes Bay, Drakes Bay OE W, San Rafael, Bolinas, Double Point, Drakes Bay OE S, Drakes Bay OE SW, and Farallon Islands.
As of June 2008, the GRE Program plans to convert digital geologic data from the U.S. Geological Survey (i.e., Open-File Report OF-1997-456 [GMAP 2621]) to cover the park boundary. GRE staff will examine a newer publication by the California Geological Survey for the Napa 30' ×60' sheet (GMAP 74823) to see where it may enhance the final digital product. To the extent possible GRE staff will edge-match the maps for Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
During the scoping session, park staff mentioned that they would like more refined large-scale surficial geologic mapping (>1:48,000 scale). As of June 2008, GRE staff had not devised a plan for how to accomplish this. Park staff also mentioned that the soils map should be completed soon. Russ Graymer (U.S. Geological Survey) mentioned that the entire Bay Area is available digitally at least at 1:62500 scale. Scoping participants also mentioned lidar data that covers a 1-km-wide swath along the San Andreas Fault, which should be incorporated into the national seashore’s geologic map. These data are available from the U.S. Geological Survey.

All use different strat nomenclature so that would have to be standardized, we would have to contact all the academics to get their data, and older quads would have to be field checked and all would have border faults. In other words it would be great to pull this all together but it would be 1.5 to 2 years worth of work. So your options are: to go ahead and try and pull this together (probably in neighborhood of $100K), decrease the area of interest and have a more detailed study of just the Saugus site, or go with the 1:250K statewide bedrock map.

2007-1127 :project scope needs revisited with USGS, VAGS. Half of park well covered by 100k sheets (Front Royal, Charlottesville), internal park covered by VAGS pub from 1976 at 62k; Scott Southworth apparently also remapping and says to expect delivery of dedicated park map in late FY 2008. SHEN sent GRE watershed boundary shapefile that will define new extent of mapping. Intersecting 7.5' quadrangles are: Linden, Front Royal, Strasburg, Flint Hill, Chester Gap, Bentonville, Rileyville, Massies Corner, Washington, Thornton Gap, Luray, Woodville, Old Rag Mt, Big Meadows, Stanley, Madison, Fletcher, Elkton East, Elkton West, Stanardsville, Swift Run Gap, McGaheysville, Grottoes, Earlysville, Free Union, Browns Cove, Crimora, Crozet, Waynesboro East, Waynesboro West, Greenfield. VAGS i-81 corridor digital files will give us Crimora, Waynesboro East, and Waynesboro West bedrock and surficial. From VAGS of-2004-03 (?) of the 11 quads, only the Grottoes is necessary for our scope. Front Royal 30x60 (GMAP 7219) can fill gaps for west half of Chester Gap, Bentonville, Rileyville, Luray, Big Meadows, Stanley 7.5' quads that don't appear to have published dedicated coverage. Other 7.5' quads within the Front Royal 30x60, but not contained in GMAP 7219 and not known to have 7.5' coverage are Washington, Thornton Gap, Woodville, Old Rag Mountain, Big Meadows (east half). 2008-0915: posted and completed; 2008-0625: Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve has 9 7.5-minute quadrangles of interest: Lake Kahola, Wilsey SE, Diamond Springs, Saffordville, Strong City, Hymer, Gladstone, Cottonwood Falls, Elmdale. The park completely resides on the Strong City Kansas 7.5’ quadrangle. The GRE supplied geologic map for TAPR will be limited to just the park boundary at this point in time. If at some later time, more information is deemed necessary, GRE staff will re-evaluate best available maps
As of June 2008, the GRE Program plans to convert digital geologic data from the Kansas Geologic Survey to cover the park boundary proper from map m-119a (GMAP 74912) and map m-119b (GMAP 74913). This map is very recently published and exists in a geodatabase format. GRE staff have some questions regarding metadata to still be obtained from the Kansas Geological Survey.

2008-0226: Georgia Hybels says VAFO and HOFU nearing completion for posting. 2008-0110: conversation with Kris Heister says she wants geo-map of entire Valley Creek Watershed; says she'll send me a shapefile showing it. and would need to revisit project scope extent with VAFO&HOFU (Steve Ambrose) staff and check with PAGS for best available data. GMAP 1578 (Newark 1x2) looks like it might work here or use PAGS statemap developed from 7.5' mapping at 62.5 scale. Scoping notes mention using GMAP 4415 (PA water report 14, 1962) that covers northern part of VAFO adequately. Wonder if this is superceded in Atlas 61 quads; not known to be digital. FYI, Montgomery County and Chester County split the park in two. Make sure we agree on proper citation of PA data either as statewide, 30x60, or 7.5' original sources (see Steph for discussion)

2012-0720: email from O'meara on update completed…..2010-1215: Allan Loy ftp'd some GIS files of prelim surficial map (GMAP 75483); will evaluate for GRI use and for potentially updating YUHO surficial geology…….2009-0709: received PDF of surficial from USGS Paul Carrera as prelim map. Need to get GIS files from MEVE intern; see Pauls emails regarding this topic. 2008-1025: decided to stop waiting for surficial geology; going with bedrock supplied by Mary Griffitts and already digitized by Anne Poole. Should be easy to check off in early FY2009. USGS Paul Carrara redoing surficial of MEVE, but this not in his scope. 2007-1129: GRE are committed to supplying both bedrock and surficial for YUHO. Bedrock completed by Anne Poole several years ago (GMAP ----), but awaiting surficial geology from academic Mary Gilliam. Need to make decision on what to move forward with. Could easily use GMAP 105 (Cortez 1x2) or CO state geology and GPRA count it as well and someday add in refinements if ever delivered.
